Where It All Began
In the early 1980s, a New Zealand scientist, Dr Peter Molan, began exploring the remarkable healing potential of Manuka honey. At the same time, Denis Watson, a passionate science teacher in Masterton, was encouraging his students to get hands-on with research that connected classroom learning to real-world impact. When their paths crossed, something special began — the spark that would one day lead to the creation of SweetHeart®.
Denis went on to found ManukaMed, a company built on a vision: to take New Zealand’s most extraordinary natural ingredient and apply real science to unlock its full potential. What started as a small local project grew into decades of innovation — from medical-grade honey for wound care to discovering unique proteins and peptides that could support overall wellbeing.
Inspired by the Land
While the science was taking shape, a new story was unfolding on the East Coast of Aotearoa. After years in forestry, Danny and Sheldon Drummond had seen first-hand how erosion and deforestation were damaging fragile hillsides and waterways. In 2018, they began replanting these landscapes with Manuka — not only to stabilise the soil but also to create lasting value through honey and oil production.
Their partnership with ManukaMed gave this project even greater purpose. The honey harvested from their regenerative forests now forms part of the Sweetheart® story — helping to create a natural heart supplement made right here in New Zealand, while restoring the land for generations to come.
